GET YOUR RESUME NOTICED

Nine out of ten times I've gotten responses from the employers to whom I've sent my resume.  I got them to notice my resume even when I may not have had the most impressive credentials.  So, how did I do it?  It's all in the verbiage, proofreading, formatting, inclusion of accurate contact information and a brief, yet relevant cover letter.

Now what if you don't have a degree or much experience?  Don't worry.  By wording your individual job entries to make them "fit" the position you're applying for, the interviewer will soon forget that you never were actually a "Strore Manager".

Here is an example.  The position advertised is for Assistant Store Manager at a cosmetics boutique.  You've held positions as an independant Mary Kay representative, a cashier at a women's clothing store, and a team leader at a pet store.  You took some business classes a couple of years ago, you own every mascara, blush and lipstick known to man (or woman), you're good with money and can figure out math in your sleep and you get to work and appointments early. Although you graduated from high school, you dropped out of college before you even declared a major.  The ad says, "Associate Degree preferred".  So, how do you get the employer to notice your resume?

You go in for the kill.  This is where unqualified applicants usually go wrong.  They either pass up the opportunity to apply altogether or choose to lie on their resume.  You can lie and hope to not get caught but lying may not even be your forte'.  Not to mention, it's now not legal to lie about having a college degree if you don't.  Crap!  I know that messed things up for a lot of people.  Alas!  No one ever said that exaggerating is wrong.  The fact is, you'll have to exaggerate like there's no tomorrow if you don't possess the right credentials for a job.  I will demonstrate to you how I'd attack this problem with the example above.
